Savitry Bougnat Boulevard Saint Jacques - Before Treatment - Water damaged photograph - Water damaged photograph - Image Layer Flaking

Image layer is cracked and flaking

The high humidity level during the water damage and the mold development in the emulsion’s gelatin created cracking and flaking of the gelatin layer which is no longer connected to the baryta layer (baryum sulfate in gelatine). The thin gelatin flakes are fragile and nearly detached from the print, it is necessary to consolidate them to avoid any losses. The consolidation is done by adding an adhesive under the flakes with a brush.
